Do you still need to know what subject Chinese kids hate most?

History of China. Why? Because they have four friggin millenia of it. Packed with stuff up to the neck. It's freakin mindboggling huge and they have to learn it all.

OK maybe that was not particularly enlightening. Just thought I'd share.

Israeli hisory lessons. Do they include Old Testament times because then you have nearly as much ghistory as the Chinese?

Italians? by Dr H0ffm4n (2.00 / 0) #4 Thu Jun 23, 2005 at 07:04:53 AM EST
What were the Italians doing of note in 2000 BC?

Chinese history is a big subject and one prone to distortion when viewed from a Eurocentric perspective. Doesn't stop me from reading a single Chinese history book that will no doubt make me an expert.

I thought Magna Graecia was 2000 BC, but was more than a 1000 years.

The history is long indeed, but the available data is sketchy. For instance, we don't even know whether King Solomon really existed. The Chinese have much more data.

OTOH our kids are made to learn the Old Testament (generally, as a historical and literary monument).

Sorry, off topic: by Alice Pulley (4.00 / 1) #3 Thu Jun 23, 2005 at 06:46:58 AM EST
This made me think of an email just received from a pal in Japan at the mo. He has just started to go out with this Japanese girl, here is his description of a date:

'She's a bit mad, talks really poetically. The other day, we'd just gone out and she said 'I've left something in your flat'. I said 'What?'. She said 'my heart'. So I gave her the keys and said 'let yourself in, I'll meet you in the pub'.'

Hes such a romantic.

I was made to learn Chinese history and I don't even speak Chinese.

is having a whole year devoted to American history. There's not that much to it, so you end up studying things that are too trivial to care about at all.
