100,000 Google servers aren't enough. -nt by chuckles (2.00 / 0) #5 Sat Jul 02, 2005 at 08:05:56 PM EST

Yeah 10,000 Google Servers by Orion Blastar (2.00 / 0) #6 Sat Jul 02, 2005 at 10:13:55 PM EST
and over 40 million people trying to access those servers all at once. All of which are trying to find their house, work, get a view of the war in Iraq, and find Osama bin Laden's hiding spot, etc.

I think Google can play a new game with Google Earth when it goes public and out of beta. Based on "Where's Waldo?" they can do "Where's Osama?" and offer a bounty to anyone who takes a screen capture of him and his location.

It's back.

I've already said this in another comment by martingale (2.00 / 0) #8 Sun Jul 03, 2005 at 03:26:40 AM EST
But a similar, but better app is NASA World Wind. It has more maps, better resolution and also shows animations for weather patterns and natural catastrophes. And it's open source.

Different apps for different purposes by damiam (2.00 / 0) #10 Sun Jul 03, 2005 at 04:17:52 PM EST
World Wind is a huge download and didn't work on my computer. But IIRC, it doesn't do driving directions/street address matching. And it doesn't have the cool elevation mapping with tilt controls that Google does. So both apps have their uses.

elevation mapping by martingale (4.00 / 1) #11 Sun Jul 03, 2005 at 08:52:02 PM EST
Elevation visuals depend on a multiplication factor. Without multiplication, everything looks flat because the earth is obviously big. You can see mountains and valleys in World Wind if you set the multiplication factor. A nice example is the grand canyon dataset.

I don't know why it wouldn't work on your computer - it's written in .NET, so if your machine is underpowered then it could get ugly. The download is that big because NASA doesn't have the massive server farm Google has, so they bundle some high level maps from around the world.

You're right about driving directions though, the NASA software emphasises education. Take your pick: address lookup or weather patterns.
