I found myself tempted by the notion of a seasonal pumpkin bagel this morning, but because i've heard that bagels are calorie-dense and i'm trying to lose weight, I did some research before deciding to buy one.

Back when I wasn't trying to lose weight, it wouldn't be uncommon on a weekend day to get breakfast at Noah's: two bagels and, if they had it, a yummy cinnamon-apple coffee cake. Some days I'd walk there for lunch and get that, too.

So here's the caloric information:

  * Blueberry bagel: 360 calories. (no information on pumpkin bagels, because they're seasonal).
  * Cream cheese for said bagel: 90 calories (conservative estimate).
  * Coffee cake: 660 calories. (?! this is more calories than are in an In-n-Out burger!)

  Total for breakfast: 1560 calories.

It's utterly breathtakingly stunningly amazing. (For the record, the quantity of oatmeal you would need to eat to get that: 5-6 cups dry volume. I don't think you could do it.)

I've actually been having oatmeal for for breakfast. And not an entire box of quaker oats worth, either.

Something going on here that the two of you want to tell us? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

What usually passes for a bagel these days is little more than a donut in disguise.

If it has flavour you shouldn't be eating it.

It's much easier than spending all that time reading labels and whatnot.

berries have close to nil calories, for example, as do many spices. You can add all the cinnamon you want to your oatmeal. :)

I can eat 6 cups of oatmeal at a sitting... by atreides (2.00 / 0) #6 Thu Oct 05, 2006 at 04:37:31 PM EST
...but I only do that when I feel the need to go on full "Colon Blow" alert or something...

6 cups of oatmeal or 6 cups of dry oats? by lm (2.00 / 0) #7 Thu Oct 05, 2006 at 04:52:00 PM EST
Once you cook 6 cups of dry oats, it's like a metric gazillion cups of oatmeal. I could probably eat that much in one day but it'd take me a couple hours and I'd probably need to talk walk or two.

you couldn't cook it all at one time by aphrael (2.00 / 0) #10 Thu Oct 05, 2006 at 05:09:44 PM EST
now, that depends on how you cooked it by lm (4.00 / 1) #12 Thu Oct 05, 2006 at 05:42:00 PM EST
A slow cooker will keep it warm for hours.

Regardless, I bet after eating the first few pounds the rest will taste disgusting whether hot or cold, fresh or warmed over.
